The imperative (l'imperatif) is the command form of the verb. It is used when you want to tell someone to do something, give a command, or offer a suggestion.
The imperative is formed by using the present tense TU, NOUS, or VOUS form of the verb.
* When using the singular form of the imperative (TU form) of -er verbs, drop the "s"
| -ER | -IR | -RE |
| parler | choisir | attendre |
singular or informal (tu form) | Parle! | Choisis! | Attends! |
plural or formal (vous form) | Parlez! | Choisissez! | Attendez! |
suggestion including yourself (nous form) | Parlons! | Choisissons! | Attendons! |
You can also use the imperative in the negative to say "Don't do
whatever!" Just put ne...pas around the verb.
Example: Don't talk! --> Ne parle pas!
Don't eat the fish! --> Ne mangez pas le poisson!
Let's not go to the park! --> N'allons pas au parc!
